7 Day Taste of the Kimberley Self-Drive Adventure

12 Day Kimberley and Gibb River Rd Self-Drive Adventure

If you would like to self-drive the Kimberley we have a suggested 7 Day Taste of the Kimberley Self Drive or for those with more time we have a 12 Day Kimberley and Gibb River Road Self Drive.

Amazing Flora and Fauna

Australia’s North West is home to an amazing array of mammals, from wallabies, possums, dingoes, euros, flying foxes and quolls to nocturnal species like sugar gliders and the endangered bilby and bandicoot.

Many species of small carnivorous marsupials also exist here, including dunnarts and the pebble mound mouse. Fortunately, many of these species have been saved from extinction because the introduced European fox cannot live in the warm northern climate.

The gorge creates stunning cascades of water flowing from the previous wet season rains that fall in the King Leopold Ranges. It is a great spot for swimming, photography and enjoying what nature has to offer. A 1km walk from the car park reaches the falls.

Once at the top of the waterfall you can enjoy a swim or go further up the creek to the opposite site. From there it is a reasonable walk over the top of the hill and through the spinifex to the bottom pool. Here is an excellent swimming hole and a magnificent view of the waterfall and the gorge to the west.

The walk into Bell Gorge takes about 1.5hrs return and you can easy spend 3 hours exploring.

Afterwards head east to Imintji Camp for your overnight stay.

Suggested Accommodation: Imintji Campsite (Camping)

Day Four - Galvans & Manning Gorges to Mt Elizabeth

You are in the heart of the Kimberley and not much distance has to be covered today so take time to explore Adcock Gorge and Galvans Gorge, a delightful spot where you can explore the waterholes in the Philip Range and take a refreshing dip.

Then on to Manning Gorge where the walk takes about one hour on a fairly well marked trail. Take your bathers, as the water is very inviting. Take a bottle of water with you and don’t deviate from the trail.

You will cross the Gibb River and as with all river crossings, it is best to keep a slow steady momentum and follow the markers in the riverbeds.

Your journey today leads to Home Valley, located at the foot of the Cockburn Range.

Suggested Accommodation: Home Valley Station – Guest Room

Day Six - Home Valley to Emma Gorge (El Questro Station)

The first river crossing is the well-known Pentecost. Travel slowly through the crossing as it has some sharp rocks below the surface. From here it’s only a short distance to the sealed road and the arrival at Emma Gorge on El Questro Station.

We suggest you take the 45 minute hike up to Emma Gorge and take a well deserved dip in i’s refreshing pool. Note the amazing colours of the rock surroundings. Make sure you are back to the poolside area in time to enjoy a relaxing drink and watch the sunset change the colour of the rock to make it look like it is glowing.

Lake Argyle Village was the original construction site for Lake Argyle Dam. Visit the interesting Argyle Downs Homestead Museum and the vast Lake Argyle, the second largest artificial dam in Australia and the lifeblood of the Ord River scheme. Located 70 km from Kunnunurra via the Victoria Highway and Lake Argyle Road, Lake Argyle village and the Argyle Downs Homestead Museum are 1,112 km from Broome, 3,284 km from Perth and 826 km from Darwin. Lake Argyle was named after Argyle Downs, the name given to the huge property established by ‘Patsy’ Durack and his sons on the banks of the Ord River. Beyond the Argyle Downs Homestead Museum is an excellent lookout which overlooks Lake Argyle and the Lake Argyle dam wall. The view is impressive as this is a dam in the middle of a desert. The bare mountains of the surrounding Carr Boyd Ranges fall steeply into the lake making it look like a desert fjord. At various points in the lake small hills rise out of the water like islands. Enjoy a spectacular cruise on the Lake.  A sunset not to be missed!

Head out to Echidna Chasm and explore this amazing part of the Bungle Bungle Range before setting up camp or staying at one of the available lodges.

Suggested Accommodation: Savannah Lodge – Safari Tent

Day Ten - Purnululu NP to Halls Creek

Discover Cathedral Gorge, an astonishing natural amphitheatre of red rock located within the Bungle Bungle Ranges in Purnululu National Park. The unusual beehive striped formations and deep gorges make it one of the most fascinating geological landmarks and one of two World Heritage sites in WA.

From Piccaninny car park, the walk winds its way through the iconic bee hives, heading down between two walls of rock before opening up into Cathedral Gorge. Water pounding through here in the wet season has created a huge amphitheatre of red rock with a pool of water in the middle. On the return journey to the car park be sure to take the alternative route through the beehives.  A 1.5-2.5 hour walk, so make sure you have an early start.

After you need to head back to the highway for your overnight stay at Halls Creek. This drive will take around 3 hours.

Suggested Accommodation: Halls Creek Motel

Day Eleven - Halls Creek to Fitzroy Crossing

We suggest you stop at Mimbi Caves for a well worth tour. Mimbi cave system reveals ancient large-scale fossilised reefs that are amongst the best preserved in the world. Learn the local Aboriginal Culture and enjoy this spectacular site.

Travelling west to Fitzroy, we suggest you book a Geikie Gorge cruise and learn about this part of the Kimberley’s culture and bush tucker. We grew together as a group and formed friendships.  We learned about the aboriginal dreamtime, the rainbows and sunsets.

Amanda S

A wonderful exciting adventure, The scenery was truly amazing. our guide was informative ,caring and very knowledgeable about the area

Morza

Every day we travelled through the scenic Kimberley ranges on roads that you wouldn’t want to take your own car on, to beautiful places that you wouldn’t find on your own. Most days, this involved a bushwalk to a river or a lake, with a swim or boat trip. A highlight was a challenging 1 hour walk up a dry river bed, for a welcome swim in a deep pool under a 60 metre droplet waterfall at Emma Gorge in El Questro Wilderness Park.
